There are a number of ways you can arrive in, and depart from Phnom Penh whether it is by air, by road, by boat or by train. We have put together the following information to help you plan your arrival to, and departure from, Phnom Penh. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

By Air

This section provides information about international flights to and from Phnom Penh.

Flights to Phnom Penh to/from Thailand

There are flights to/from Bangkok with Bangkok Airways, Thai International Airways and Air Asia. Air Asia is by far the cheapest when booking ahead.

Flights to Phnom Penh to/from Singapore

There are flights to/from Singapore with Jetstar and SilkAir with Jetstar generally been cheaper.

Flights to Phnom Penh to/from Malaysia

There are flights to/from Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia and Malaysian Airlines with Air Asia been the cheapest if you can book ahead.

Flights to Phnom Penh to/from Vietnam

There are flights to/from Ho Chi Minh with Vietnam Airlines.

Flights to Phnom Penh to/from Hong Kong

There are flights to/from Hong Kong with Siem Reap Airways/Bangkok Airways and Dragonair.

Flights to Phnom Penh to/from Laos

Getting to/from Phnom Penh airport to/from town centre.
A taxi from the airport to Phnom Penh city centre costs around US$7 one way and the trip back will cost around the same amount.
A mini bus to and from the airport is US$10 each way.
A motorbike to and from the airport is US$2 each way.

By Road

This section provides information about travelling to and from Phnom Penh by bus or taxi.

Getting from Bangkok to Trat

There are number of buses from eastern bus station in Bangkok to the bus station in Trat which is a couple of kilometres from the market.

Getting from Trat to Koh Kong

By minibus costs around 100 Baht in both directions and takes around an hour to/from the border (Koh Kong). There are regular buses which leave from the bus station, which is couple of kilometres from the market.

Getting to Bangkok from Trat

By bus takes around 5-6 hours. The last bus from Trat to Bangkok leaves around 7:00pm. The bus leaves from the bus station, wihch is a couple of kilometres from the market.

Getting to Phnom Penh from Koh Kong

The taxi takes around 6 hours and costs around 400 Baht or US$10 per person.

A mini bus takes around 7-8 hours and costs around 350 Baht or US$9 per person.

The road is in pretty good condition now, although in rainy season the river crossings can take some time which slow things down.

Warning: It is becoming harder and harder for tourists to get their visas at the right price of US$20 without having to wait for a few hours.

Getting to/from Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City via Bavet/Moc Bai

The bus takes around 7 hours for the whole trip and it costs from US$9 to US$12 depending on which bus company you use. We would recommend Mekong Express bus, because they are nicer buses and you do not need to changes buses. The price for the Mekong Express bus is US$12 per person. You can NOT get a Vietnam visa on arrival.

Getting to/from Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City via Chau Doc

This trip takes longer than the Bavet/Moc Dai crossing as you go partly by bus (Vietnam side) and partly by boat (Cambodia side) and this trips takes around 10 to 12 hours. The boat is usually only in operation during the wet season, because during the dry season it is normally not possible. We would also recommend that you just buy a ticket (around US$10) from a travel agent to do this trip as there a lot of changing vehicles if you do it on your own.

DOMESTIC TRAVEL

By Air

This section provides information about domestic flights to and from Phnom Penh.

Flights to Phnom Penh to/from Siem Reap

There are regular flights to/from Siem Reap with around 6 flights daily in both directions. The price is around US$70 each way, including airline taxes, but not departure tax (US$6). A taxi from Phnom Penh airport into town costs about US$7 and a motorbike costs about US$2.

Flights to/from Phnom Penh and Rattakiri

You can fly to Rattakiri 3 times a week with PMT Air for around US$40 one way.

By Road

This section provides information about travelling to and from Phnom Penh by bus or taxi.

Getting to/from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap

The road from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh is in good condition and it is a pretty smooth ride.

By Bus
There are many bus companies that run between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap with the most popular companies being the Mekong Express and Capitol bus company, but there are a number of others that do the same trip. Prices for a one way trip cost between US$4 and US$12 depending on which bus company you use. The Mekong Express bus company is the most comfortable with good air conditioning, a toilet on board and also a light breakfast or dinner depending on the departure time. The Mekong Express takes around 6 hours. The Capitol bus company is not as nice, but is very popular with tourists and it costs US$4 each way and takes around 5.5 hours. Your hotel, guesthouse or a travel agent can arrange bus tickets for you.
Mekong Express bus leaves in both directions at 7:00am, 7:30am, 8:30am and 12:30pm daily.
Capitol bus leaves in both directions at 7:00am, 7:30am, 10:30am, 12:30pm, 1:00pm and 2:00pm daily.
All the other buses leave around the same time. The last bus from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap is 2:00pm.
During busy holidays there will be many more buses running different times and the prices also go up.

By Taxi
A Toyota Camry taxi can be hired for the 340 km trip between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap for about US$50 each way. The taxis to Siem Reap from Phnom Penh wait for customers at the Phsar Thmei (New Market) and the taxis from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh wait at the entrance to the main bus station in Siem Reap about 4km from the town centre.

Getting to/from Phnom Penh and Battambang

By Bus

There are a number of bus companies that do the trip to/from Battambang now and they leave from around 6:30am to 8:30am depending on bus company. The journey takes around 5 hours and the road is in very good condition.

By Taxi

A taxi costs between US$35 and US$40 for the trip and it takes around 4 hours.

Getting to/from Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville

By Bus

There are a number of bus companies that do this route now and leave at different times of the day. The first bus leaves around 6:30am and the last bus leaves around 3:30pm. The prices for bus tickets range from US$3.50 to US$5.00. The road is in very good condition and the trip takes around 4 hours.

By Taxi

A taxi costs between US$30 and US$35 for the trip and it takes around 3 hours.

Getting to/from Phnom Penh and Kampot

By Bus
The bus takes around 4.5 hours and costs around US$4. The bus goes the long way around where the road is in good condition.

By Taxi
You can take a shared or a whole taxi and it will cost you around US$25 for the whole taxi or US$4 for a shared taxi, but expect to see about 7-8 people in the taxi if you get a shared taxi. The road is in poor condition and it is quite bumpy the trip takes around 2.5 hours.

Getting to/from Phnom Penh and Kep

Kep is around 25km from Kampot and the road is in good condition. The bus to Kampot goes via Kep.

By Train

Geting to/from Phnom Penh and Battambang

There is one train service in Cambodia that runs from Phnom Penh to Battambang once a week, but you have to be adventurous, in no hurry and maybe a bit mad to do this trip. The train is very old, rusty and in poor condition. The trip takes anywhere from 12 hours to, well, sometimes it never makes it at all. The train leaves at around 6:30am on Saturday from Phnom Penh and then leaves Battambang about the same time on Sundays.

By Boat

Getting to/from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap

There is one boat a day leaving in both directions to/from Phnom Penh leaving at 7:00am. The cost of the ticket will be between US$22 and US$25 per person. The trip takes anywhere from 5.5 to 9 hours depending on water levels (there is little water in the rivers during the hot season ). See Weather & Climate for more information about the weather. If you buy your ticket at your hotel or guesthouse, the boat company will pick you up by bus, which is included in the price. Sometimes the boat is cancelled if the water is too low.
The boat between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh is not very scenic, because you are on Tonle Sap Lake most of the time, so all you see is water. If you do take the boat, then make sure you have a sun hat and high factor sun lotion, especially if you are sitting out on the deck.
